Help us meet our goal by June 30th!
2017 Summer Library Campaign

summer challenge

The San Mateo Public Library is more than just a place to find books. It’s “our community’s living room”—a beautiful, energy-efficient building where people of all backgrounds gather to discover and share ideas. The Library is also a place to explore a variety of programs, like the Summer Learning Challenge. There’s even more down the road, such as a new Library outreach vehicle. We’re excited to watch as this “pop-up Library” unfolds!

We’ve set a goal to raise $100,000 by June 30th, 2017 to support these projects and other important Library initiatives. Our campaign is already well underway due to a $10,000 gift from The Elliott Family! We hope you will join these valued supporters by contributing today. All donations—large or small—make a difference, and will help the Library strengthen our region through literacy and learning. Please click here to donate now!

The Role of the Library in the Digital Age

the digital age and the library

Over 100 invited guests from the Silicon Valley tech community attended this unique event at the San Mateo Public Library. Panelists and attendees agreed that libraries are more important than ever in the digital age. As community needs change, libraries will continue to evolve, but they will remain an essential place for people to learn, gather, and exchange ideas. Our esteemed panelists included panel Moderator Greg Lucas (State Librarian of California), Daniel J. Clancy (Nextdoor), Cameron Johnson (Netflix), Karen Kuklin (Gensler) Karen G. Schneider (Sonoma State University Library), David Weekly (Google Rapid Rollout Lab). We also thank our Host Committee and our reception sponsor Cuvée Wine Cellars! Feedback from the event will help us better understand what is needed from a 21st Century library, and how the community can best support it.

November 29, 2016

After a very successful first year in 2015, the San Mateo Public Library Foundation participated in #GivingTuesday, a nationwide effort to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in making charitable contributions. Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday inspires people to support organizations that they care about. This year, #GivingTuesday took place on November 29, 2016 – the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Using social media, the effort created momentum for holiday giving, in the same way that Black Friday and Cyber Monday have mobilized holiday shopping.
